HOW TO PURCHASE THE RIGHT WIG – TYPES OF WIGS + PROS & CONS

Updated: Jun 17, 2019

There are a few things to think about when purchasing a wig. Having a picture of what you want is a great first step, however it also helps to know the type of wig you want to ensure you purchase the correct wig for your needs. It makes the purchasing experience much easier for both you and the retailer you are purchasing from. There are different types of wigs to choose from, I'll give a brief description of each below to help you make a decision:

Lace closure wig

A lace closure wig is typically handmade by sewing weave-in bundles and a lace closure onto a wig cap.

  • Pros - easy to wear, does not require much customisation and no need to lay it with glue or gels; it's perfect for first time wig wearers. It lasts longer than other wigs because it does not have a lot of lace which can easily tear or lose hair and it has a lot of reusable weave-in hair. It is also the most affordable type of wig to purchase.

  • Cons - limited in terms of styling, it cannot be pulled up into a high bun with a natural hairline. The most you can do in terms of styling is a soft bun covering your ears or wear it lose.

Lace frontal wig

A lace frontal wig has lace at the forehead extending from ear to ear and weave-in bundles at the back. Lace frontal wigs will give you a natural hairline in the front, meaning the hair can be parted anywhere throughout the front of the unit.

  • Pros - allows for more styling options as the hair can be parted anywhere throughout the front of the unit. It can be pulled up into half a bun with a natural hairline.

  • Cons - requires customisation and may require glue or gels to lay it down. Thus, it is not beginner friendly. It does not last as long as a lace closure wig because it has a lot of lace in front which can easily tear or lose hair. Constant customisation also means the unit wears off quicker.

360 frontal wig

A 360 lace frontal wig has lace all around the perimeters of the head and it is made by sewing a 360 frontal & weave-in bundles onto a wig cap.

  • Pros - is versatile in terms of styling options and allows for up-dos and high pony tails. It can be parted anywhere throughout the perimeters of the head and can be parted in any direction; so you get the benefit of both a lace frontal wig and a full lace wig. It is also more affordable compared to a full lace wig.

  • Cons - like a lace frontal wig, this type of wig also requires customisation and may require glue or gels to lay it down. It is not beginner friendly and is less durable compared to the lace frontal wig because it has a lot of lace all around the head which can easily tear or lose hair. Constant customisation also means the unit wears off quicker.

Full lace wig

A full lace wig is constructed from a lace cap that covers the whole head, meaning it does not have weave-in bundles, only lace throughout the whole unit.

  • Pros - is versatile in terms of styling options as it can be styled in any way one would your own hair. It can be parted anywhere throughout the whole wig and in any direction.

  • Cons - requires customisation and may require glue or gels to lay it down. It is not beginner friendly and is less durable because the full unit is made of lace which can easily tear or lose hair. It is the most expensive type of wig but not as full as the above mentioned wigs in terms of volume; this is because it does not have any weave-in bundles which can ensure more volume.

There it is guys, I advise you purchase the type of wig you are comfortable with wearing. I normally go for whatever is easiest to install and less time consuming. Let me know which type you prefer and why in the comment box below.
